School Technical Training Brings Air Con's Chilly Air to South Taiwan

Under the banner of introducing a different kind of education for Taiwan's countryside, TSMC Charity Foundation has appealed to other businesses in bringing professionals and technology to rural schools. Punting County's Education Department lead the charge as National Chiatung Agricultural Vocational Senior High School (佳冬高農)’s principal, Mr. Lin Hung-yuan (林鴻源), and the principal of Hengchun Vocational High School (恆春工商), Mr. Tsai Chun-yan (蔡俊彥) answered the call to work with TSMC in initiating the first step in its training camp for students, partnering with air-conditioning manufacturer Daikin (大金空調) to join the program.

“Be careful with this wire or it’ll malfunction.” Teenagers at National Chiatung Agricultural Vocational Senior High School roll up their sleeves, pick up some screws, and work on air conditioning units under the guidance of a Daikin professional. From cleaning, disassembling to testing its functions and even squatting down to lift up the machinery, the pupils are already becoming hardened professionals in the field.

Their principal, Mr. Lin Hung-yuan, says that rural children possess a peculiar lack of self-confidence, and after twelve years of compulsory school, TSMC and Daikin's mentorship provides them with a hope for the future, sparking their technical skills all while staying in their hometown and creating change in their community. In fact, finishing the 30-hour training program is just the beginning. Aside from setting one foot into society and the industry, putting their studies into practice and helping with product testing, Pingtung County will also assign them to assist in training other students, allowing them to give back to society what they've previously learned. Creating this cycle of benevolence is precisely what Chairperson Sophie Chang believes in, spreading one's passion and dreams to the next generation.
