TSMC Collaborates with Hsin Tung Yang: Volunteer Chefs Holding a Feast for Seniors

One of the most important initiatives of TSMC Charity Foundation is our Cherish Food Program. Chairperson of TSMC Charity Foundation Sophie Chang stated that aside from providing food delivery to rural areas for the disadvantaged, the foundation hopes to offer off-grade food products to the minorities by inviting more food product companies to join in the action. Thanks to the support of New Taipei City and Hsin Tung Yang for sharing our vision of cherishing food, we invited chefs to make a feast out of local, in season off-grade produce for the senior citizens living in rural Changyuan community.

Rural-to-urban migration has been a most serious issue in the Shuangxi District in New Taipei City in recent years. To promote a healthy lifestyle for the local senior citizens, the local government has established a senior center, combining local granny samba dancing with food sharing events. Local citizens appreciated the efforts of TSMC, Mai's Hsin Tung Yang Foundation, and the Social Affairs Bureau for distributing resources to the rural areas, thereby giving the district’s senior residents and children an opportunity to have a taste of five-star cooking made with off-grade produce.

Hsin Tung Yang has joined in New Taipei City’s campaign for cherishing food with off-grade produce since 2017. Chairperson of Mai's Hsin Tung Yang Foundation, Mai Shen-Yang, expressed great joy in participating in the Cherish Food Program. Through the event, he hopes to bring more happiness to the disadvantaged residents living in rural areas and demonstrate the value of off-grade produce. On the day of the event, 40 master chefs from different restaurants and hotels arrived at 8:00 am. at Changyuan community, preparing the mise en place and getting things ready. Chefs started cooking at 10:00 with different methods: deep frying, stir-frying, braising, to name a few. Before long, the aroma of dishes was wafting through the air in the senior center. Senior citizens gathered at the Ganjiao Weihui Temple to watch Ganlin elementary school students perform poetry recitation and the dance performance led by Borough Warden of Changyuan community Chen Tzu-Lang.

Chairperson Sophie Chang would like to call for everyone’s participation in the campaign for cherishing food. By participating, people can not only cut down on food waste and leftovers, they may be able to help the disadvantaged living in rural areas and the seniors living alone.
