Rural Health: Providing Penghu Islands with Ultrasound Machines

While Wangan and Cimei are the least populated townships in Penghu islands, they also happen to be rural towns that are in dire need of medical resources. Since the government’s medical resources cannot reach here, two resident doctors take turns doing shifts to keep the health center open on weekdays.

The original ultrasound machines were out of order due to damage, and purchasing new machines will cost the center more than a million N.T. dollars, a sum unaffordable for a small health center.

This medical device shortage proved to be an issue for the two doctors, since they need a portable ultrasound machine for performing examinations when they deliver mobile health services to other islands in Baisha Township.

After on-site visit, TSMC Charity Foundation has decided to donate ultrasound machines to health centers in three different sites to help with Penghu’s lack of medical resources and public health vulnerability.
